Porsche’s new North American factory team kicked off in the best possible fashion in 2014 with victory at the Rolex 24 at Daytona.
Fast forward 12 months and the Porsche pack finished qualifying with a disappointing result – the three Porsche 911 GT Le Mans machines filled the final three spots on the grid.
2014 winner Patrick Pilet remains upbeat about his team’s chances in the race today. If there is one thing for certain, you can never count out Porsche in any endurance race.
“Here is always difficult. We saw last year that until the end of the race nothing is finished. We don’t have the quickest pace compared with the others, especially with in a straight line but we have a good package,” Pilet said.
“Everything is working well and we have good tires for the low temperatures at night. We are pretty confident about the ability of the team and the drivers who will all do a great job.
“We have a consistent car so now the key is going to be on the lead lap in the last three hours and go fighting from there.
“If you look at the BOP adjustments in GTLM, we have the same package that we had at Petit Le Mans last year but everyone else got bigger restrictor or less weight. It will be difficult for us but it is a long race and the most important thing is to have no incidents. The traffic will be tricky because the GTD cars are still quick in a straight line so it is no easy to overtake.
“We know how to win the race because we did it last year so now we have to do the same job.”
